INFOMIX: Information integration meets nonmonotonic logic programs

Zum Vortrag:

With the rise of the internet, information integration has become more and more a key issue for advanced information systems. The INFOMIX project, which is funded by the Future and Emerging Technologies arm of the EU IST programme, aims at providing a powerful model for information integration which is well versed to address problems such as inconsistency and incompleteness of data in sources, by resorting to methods of computational logic. In this talk, we shall give an overview of the project, present the architecture of the INFOMIX system prototype, and discuss some technical issues concerning the adopted approach. The currently developed INFOMIX prototype employs the non-monotonic DLV logic programming system for inconsistency and incompleteness management, and combines it with a traditional relational database engine and a rich data acquisition and transformation framework. The results presented are by or in cooperation with members of the project consortium, which consists of the University of Calabria, the University of Rome "La Sapienza", the Vienna University of Technology, and Rodan Systems, Poland.

Zur Person:

Thomas Eiter is a Professor of Knowledge Based Systems at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), Austria, where he is currently the head of the Institute of Information Systems. His current research interests include knowledge representation and reasoning, logic programming and databases, knowledge-based agents, and algorithms and complexity in databases and AI, but also interdisciplinary projects in engineering. Thomas Eiter earned his Engineer and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from TU Wien, Austria in 1989 and 1991, respectively, and a Dozent degree in 1995. He holds his current position since 1998. Before that, he was an assistant at TU Wien from 1990-1996, and then an associate professor in the Computer Science Department of the University of Giessen, Germany. Thomas Eiter has served on many program committees in the fields of databases, AI, and agents, and currently co-chairs the ICDT 2005 conference. Part of his work has been honored with the IJCAI 2001 and AAAI 2002 Distinguished Paper Awards.
