In the talk I will survey the IDD (Integrated Diagnosis and Design) project, a V framework EU project which aims at the definition of a new design process for automotive systems. The goal is to integrate the process of diagnostic development (FMEA, diagnosability analysis, sensor placement for diagnosability) in the early phases of the design process, in parallel with the design of the systems and of their control strategies and software. At the current stage of the process a new design methodology has been defined and tools for supporting it are being implemented.

Luca Console is full professor of Computer Science at the Dipartimento
di Informatica of the Università di Torino. He is active in the area of
model-based reasoning and diagnosis since the mid 80's, working on
foundations (theories of diagnosis and abductive reasoning,
foundations for diagnosis of dynamic systems) and on applications (he
has been the responsible of several projects, with specific attention
to automotive applications). He has been the editor of the book
"Readings in Model-based Diagnosis" (with J. deKleer and W. Hamscher)
and he gave an invited talk on the subject at IJCAI 89. He is author
of about 80 papers in international journals and conferences.
