The Future of Compilation: Research on Mobile Code Systems and On-the-Fly Code Generation/Optimization

The Java Virtual Machine appears to be have won the race to become the predominant software portability scheme for the Internet. This is a misconception: the race is still wide open and the JVM may not even be among the eventual winners. On one hand, the JVM doesn't scale well to large applications, which will create opportunities for alternative solutions to fill the gap. On the other hand, it is surprisingly simple to introduce alternative portability schemes alongside Java in a manner that is completely transparent to end-users.

At UCI, we have created such an alternative portability scheme called "Juice" and integrated it into the two predominant Web browsers. The lecture will explore the main conceptes and advantages of the alternative approach.
