Call Admission Methods in ATM Systems

The Asynchron Transfer Mode ( ATM ) is one of the most important telecommunication technology of the near future integrating the classical and new telecommunication services as voice, video and data transmission and switching. The ATM is widely used in the up to date LAN, MAN and WAN systems, therefore it is considered as the basic technology of the integrated telecommunication infrastracture of the Information Society.

In the present lecture an overview is given on the methods and algorithm of the Call Admission Control as the key element of the network management system. Due to the capability to serve a large number and various types of user traffic ATM networks are going to perform laeding role in telecommunications. To guarantee high quality of services for a lot of customers and efficient use of network resources the ATM network management has to contain appropriate Call Admission Control algorithms. Choosing suitable network and user models the Call Admission Control problem can be traced back to statistical inequalities. The lecture deals with the following problems:

  1. Introduction
ATM philosophy, reference model of ATM protocols.
  2. Main functios of the network management system in ATM networks
Network Resource Management, Routing, Traffic Shaping, Call Admission Control, Priority Control, Policing, Congestion Control
  3. Methods of the Call Admission Control in ATM
Basic classification: zero buffer models, non-zero buffer models Typical traffic models: ON-OFF sources, other models
    1. Zero buffer models
Fast convolution, Chernoff -bound, neural networks
    2. Non-zero buffer models
Estimation of the tail distribution in queuing system.
  4. Conclusions
