An Integrated Perspective on Software-Oriented Issues and Requirements for Modern Information Systems

Modern information systems require principled technological capabilities that transcend those currently available, in order to meet application expectations. Inter/intra-disciplinary research advances are needed to provide software engineering support for the design, development, and continual evolution of advanced systems. Further, the software sciences research agenda must address a multitude of system-level issues including interfaces, machine-learning, formal methods and models, knowledge acquistion/representation, and synthesis of knowledge from large-scale heterogeneous (sometimes multimedia) and distributed resources. Advances in hardware capabilities have given impetus to the conceptualization of ever larger and more complex systems. However, the lack of well defined software science and engineering disciplines has had serious consequences; this lack has impeded progress. Present software practices, largely derived from the "automated data processing era", do not acceptably support software/information system-life-cycle system issues. Moreover, the traditional approaches have generally ignored the need to provide an integrated theoretical basis for automation information-processing system implementation. Significant opportunities exist for articulating a vision of an adequate paradigm from which to create a more useful and appropriate research and engineering agenda. The thrust of this presentation is to contribute to motivating an on-going discussion in the science and engineering communities.
